Tom Ingram continued his impressive start to the 2024 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season at Donington Park by claiming his second victory of the day for Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS this afternoon (Sunday).
For the second race in succession it was one of the BMWs which made the strongest start from the line, with Jake Hill moving immediately alongside Ingram on the approach to Redgate as the lights went out. The Laser Tools branded car promptly swung around the outside and into the lead with Ingram initially settling into second with race one runner-up Ash Sutton lying third.
Behind the leading trio, Colin Turkington’s Team BMW machine fell slightly further behind after a slower start before a lock up at McLeans allowed Josh Cook to squeeze into fourth in his Toyota Corolla at Coppice. Ronan Pearson followed up his strong run in the earlier race by running this group too, before running wide and onto the grass just a handful of laps later.
Whilst Hill enjoyed running in clean air early on, Ingram and Sutton were left to duke it out behind with the duo almost collecting each other at McLeans on lap five. Sutton produced a strong run through Schwantz to move alongside, but was stuck on the outside as the pair approached the following right hander. This allowed Ingram to hold firm and keep second place, which would prove crucial as the race wore on.
Hill appeared to have things under control, but as the race entered its final few laps, Ingram and Sutton were still in close pursuit. And as the leaders began their 14th tour of the National circuit, Ingram spotted an opening at Redgate. After moving alongside, the Hyundai driver used his TOCA Hybrid boost to cement the position and take a lead he would hold until the end of the race.
Moments after Ingram made his pass, Sutton caught Hill off the ideal line and overtook the BMW at the Old Hairpin. Hill briefly regained second with a run down the straight into Roberts just a lap later, but Sutton fought back to claim the position once more just moments later. The leading three remained in order for the final two laps, with Ingram crossing the line first, less than two seconds in front of Hill in third.
Behind that, Cook was forced to defend hard to hold onto fourth with Turkington applying pressure with Dan Cammish just behind too. Neither of his pursuers were able to find a decisive opening however, with Turkington ultimately settling for fifth whilst Cammish held on to sixth despite suffering from loose bodywork late on.
Adam Morgan and Aiden Moffat claimed seventh and eighth ahead of the hard charging Rob Huff who was forced to work for his ninth place after starting from the rear of the field. The former World Touring Car Champion has suffered a tricky weekend with qualifying issues and race one misfortune keeping him towards the back of the starting line-up. The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK pro was able to display his class in the second contest of the day however, rapidly climbing through the pack to score points. Daniel Rowbottom completed the top-ten.
