Retro thrills at Donington Historic Festival day two

03 May 2025

The second day of Donington Historic Festival has seen a wealth of nostalgic action across six races from a variety of classes.

The first race of the day saw incredible pre-war machinery in the ‘Mad Jack’ race go wheel to wheel as a tribute to daredevil aviator and racer Richard 'Mad Jack' Shuttleworth. First place was won by Gareth Burnett in an Alta Sports, followed by Rudi Friedrichs in a Alvis Firefly Special, and Beebee in a Frazer Nash TT Rep.

The Under 2 Litre Touring Car (U2TC) category then set off for their second race of the weekend. Guy Smith took the win once again in his Lotus Cortina, with drivers Smith and Reynolds taking second place, followed by Jonathan Mitchell in third.

Carbon-clad GT racers in GT3 Legends commenced their first race of the weekend in the afternoon. Jonathan Mitchell secured the win with a 57.053-second lead in his Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Drivers Holme and Jordan, and Christian Albrecht joined him on the podium.

GT cars of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s delivered an hour of retro competition in the HMRN Pre ’63 GT category. Shelby Cobras dominated the podium, with drivers Franchitti and Fisken taking the top spot, followed by Spiers and Greensall, and Matt Holme.

The Superformance Ferrari Club Classic divided the longer races with a 20-minute sprint. First place was awarded to Wayne Marrs in a F355 Challenge, with Gary Culver taking second place, and Tristan Simpson in third place.

Endurance racing from the 1960s concluded the day, as the historic Royal Automobile Club Pall Mall Cup took to the track for a two hour race. Lynn S and Lynn M were victorious in a Lotus Elan and took the top spot on the podium, followed by Oeynhausen and Newall in second and Friedrichs and Pearson in third.
